Northern Flicker Portrait
Woodpecker photo from Smelt Bay Cortes Island BC, Canada
Golden evening light catches a Northern Flicker foraging for invertebrates in the short grass. Though technically woodpeckers these striking birds find most of their food by pecking in the ground, frequently hauling out giant juicy white grubs close to the size of their own head.
